Coatings Inspector Program Level 2

This certification is designed for Level 2 Coating Inspectors responsible for performing and documenting non-destructive / destructive inspections of liquid and non-liquid coatings to any substrate in a shop setting (e.g. workshop, factory, or plant) or under the supervision of a level 3 inspector when working in a field setting (e.g. production facilities, plants, or oil fields).


A candidate should have working knowledge of:

  • Corrosion
  • Surface preparation
  • Cleanliness
  • Environmental conditions
  • Test instruments
  • Coating mixtures
  • Safety

NOTE: NACE highly recommends that candidates complete Coatings Inspector Program Level 1 before attempting the level 2 certification.

Requirements for CIP Level 2 Certification

• Active CIP Level 1 Certification
Work Experience
• 2 years verifiable coatings related work experience.

• Successful completion of the following course: NACE CIP Level 2 Course
Core Exam Requirement 1
• Certification Exam-CIP Level 2 Practical exam
Note: This exam is delivered as part of the NACE CIP Level 2 course

Application Submission

  • Certification candidates must apply for this certification by submitting an on-line application which is subject to approval.
  • Applications must be submitted within 3 years of successful completion of exam.

To begin the certification process:

Upon successful completion of requirements, the candidate will be awarded a NACE Coating Inspector Level 2

Certification renewal requirements

  • An approved Recertification application is required every 3 years
  • 1.5 year’s work experience
