Coatings Inspector Program Level 1

This certification is designed for Coating Inspectors responsible for performing and documenting basic and non-destructive inspections of liquid coatings applied by brush, roller or spray to steel surfaces under the supervision of a level 2 in a shop setting or level 3 inspector when working in a shop or field setting.


A candidate should have entry level knowledge of:

  • Corrosion
  • Surface preparation
  • Cleanliness
  • Environmental conditions
  • Test instruments
  • Coating mixtures
  • Safety

Requirements for CIP Level 1 Certification


Course Requirements
• Successful completion of the following course: NACE CIP Level 1 Course
Core Exam Requirement 1
• Certification Exam-CIP Level 1 Practical exam
Note: This exam is delivered as part of the NACE CIP Level 1 course  
Core Exam Requirement 2
• Certification Exam-CIP Level 1 Exam NACE-CIP1-001
Note: This exam is available on CBT at Pearson Vue

Certification renewal requirements

  • An approved Recertification application is required every 3 years
  • 1.5 year’s work experience
