This certification is designed for Level 2 Coating Inspectors responsible for performing and documenting non-destructive / destructive inspections of liquid and non-liquid coatings to any substrate in a shop setting (e.g. workshop, factory, or plant) or under the supervision of a level 3 inspector when working in a field setting (e.g. production facilities, plants, or oil fields).

After completing two years of inspection related work and successful completion of the NACE CIP Level 2 Course, an intermediate inspector has a “working knowledge” of all referenced competencies identified for level 1 and 2. They can undertake unsupervised nondestructive and destructive inspections of liquid and non‐liquid coatings applied to any substrate while working in a shop setting or under the supervision of level 3 certified inspector when working in a field setting.

Who should apply

NACE Institute highly recommends that candidates complete the Coatings Inspector Program Level 1 requirements for certification before attempting the CIP Level 2 certification.

Certification exams

NII certification requirements include the practical exam administered at the end of course, along with an exam delivered via computer-based testing (CBT).

The multiple-choice CBT exam is scheduled separately from the course and delivered via Pearson VUE. A voucher needed to schedule the CBT exam is included as part of your initial course registration.

Renewal requirements

An approved recertification application is required every 3 years. The work experience requirement for renewals for all certifications is one and half (1.5) years for the most recent three (3) year period. Additionally, some certifications have other requirements related to responsibility in charge. 

As you prepare for renewal, you can use the Work Experience/Professional Development Log to keep track of your work experience and Professional Development Hours (PDH’s). Work experience and PDH’s will be submitted in your renewal application. See the certification renewal guide for PDH's requirements.

Certification holders are required to pay a non-refundable processing fee for renewal.
NOTE: NACE reserves the right to return any incomplete applications or those that do not meet the requirements. All application fees are non-refundable. To avoid processing delays or forfeiture of fees, please ensure that the application is complete, meets all the requirements and payment has been received.
